I got my birthday present last week about this time ... a few days late.

Suncoast called last Tuesday to tell me that the Platinum Collector's DVD Gift Set of "The Two Towers" I'd ordered was in and I could come pick it up. So I got to spend a couple days re-visiting Fangorn, Helm's Deep, and checking out the statue of Smeagol. I am *SO* glad I've waited for the Collector's editions to come out. Despite the purist's grumblings, "The Lord of the Rings" is a major event for me, on the same level as the original Star Wars trilogy. The story has been well told, the effects have been outstanding, and the cast and crew have done an outstanding job. I am *SO* ready for "The Return of the King" next month.

Also of note, we saw "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World". While I am not a Patrick O'Brian aficionado, I'd been looking forward to seeing this movie. While it may not have been up to par as far as accuracy goes, and perhaps Crowe wasn't everything he could have been, I still enjoyed the movie, and I suppose I shall have to start reading that series for myself. Joyce's reaction (and I quote) "It's a guy flick."

And, of course, we had to round out our Matrix experience by seeing Matrix: Revolutions". Despite the critics, we also enjoyed this one, me more so than Joyce I think. While it completed the story for Joyce, I think that I saw further into it than she cared to. Some of the action was a little much, but it all worked out in the end. We are talking about renting a copy of Animetrix if we can find it. Someone said it was pretty good too.

I know this is late, but if you didn't get to see "Pirates of the Caribbean", rent it. It's worth the trouble.

Next up, "Timeline" comes out this week. Joyce and I have both read the novel, so we're looking forward to seeing how they do with the movie. Haven't been too impressed with Crichton with the exception of "The Andromeda Strain" and "Jurassic Park", but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt again. "The Missing" looks pretty decent, as does "The Last Samurai". Plenty to see this holiday season (*not* counting "LotR:TRotK" Happy movie viewing, y'all !!!

Glad to be back - even if it *is* in a limited way. I've missed y'all too. I've been trying to catch up with everybody's most recent exploits. I'll see if I can stay "alive" here for a while now.
