Thank you, Shadesong. Whippersnapper that she is, young Shadesong has finally shamed me into trying this Live Journal thing ... but only after constant reassurances. She's such a charmer.

So here I sit on a bright sunny Autumn morning. I've got the VCR running in the background as Annorien watches the shows she missed - Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and Enterprise. Tomorrow I'm going to have to reset the VCR to catch all our shows as I will be at classes all week - Angel, Everwood, Buffy, Smallville, Enterprise, Firefly, and John Doe. I'm ready for Birds of Prey to start - the premise is intriguing and I hope they do as good a job with it as they have with Smallville, i.e. minimal gee-whiz factor and more character and story building.

The time has finally arrived to change eyeglasses. Today's schedule calls for a visit to the ophthalmologist and new prescription glasses. After putting it off for over a year, it's bi-focal time I guess. Constantly having to take my glasses off to read, then put them back on to 'see', then take them back off again to read, is getting ridiculous. Can't wear contacts because my eyes are too sensitive to having anything in them. So - time to 'baby' my eyes once again. Hate it as I do, it's so much nicer seeing individual leaves on trees than an indistinguishable green mass.

Dinnie sits on my terminal screen admonishing me that with age comes wisdom ... and stronger glasses.

Later, y'all.

I have been enthralled by the possibilities Birds of Prey ever since I saw the announcement of the show. I didn't follow comics very far as a kid, sticking mostly with Classics Illustrated and Batman. I guess it's just that I got hooked on science fiction at a young age and read books more than looked at comics.

These many years later, I found Miller's _The_Dark_Knight_Returns_ a riveting story. I picked up all four of the original Ballads and Sagas from Chalres Vess. Finally spinning off into odd things like Team 7, Deathblow, Wetworks, and Animal Mystic. Then comics sort of died off again as writers left during the great upheaval about 7-8 years ago. I haven't been able to get back into it again, despite my interest in trying Gaiman's Sandman.

Still ... I have high hopes for Birds of Prey.

Oh, there were still some good writers left, but there was definitely an implosion in the industry then. It's gotten much better again. You might enjoy Fables (which just had issue 5 come out, so is easy to get on board with), a nifty tale about fairy tale creatures who have assimilated into our society. It seems to be well-received in Sandman fandom.
