What I Did On My Summer(?) Vacation
Nov. 25th, 2003 02:38 pmWell, with the better part of a week and 1/2 worth of time off, what did I do (besides take my med's and slurp meals.) It so happens that this past weekend, my sweetheart and I yelled "Road Trip!!!" and we took off north-bound.
Seem's that Joyce's ancestors (the Grimes) were participants in the great Oklahoma Land Rush (yeah - the land rush depicted in "Far and Away"). Their homestead, basically, included everything currently in and around what is currently Kingfisher OK, just north of OKC. I'd promised that we'd take a trip up that way some time, seeing as we are so close, so off we went. We arrived in Kingfisher and took in 2 of the 3 family cemeeries. The main "Grimes" amily cemetery is about 5.5 miles east of town and the "Rankin" family one is to the northeast. We didn't make it to the Kingfisher cemetery (where a grandmother and great aunt are buried.) The people in Kingfisher were real nice about helping strangers. Joyce went into the local Wal-Mart for some stuff for Max, and the cashier called back to the back for someone who gave us precise directions to the second cemeery. Once the picture taking was out of the way, we noticed that the day was still early, so we drove over on to Guthrie, then north and east to Ponca City on the edge of the Osage Indian Reservation. A side benefit ... I got to hear the Prairie Home Companion episode that featured Natalie MacMaster. Ah ... dreamy fiddle playing.
The next morning we took off across the Reservation proper. It was so beautiful - miles and miles of empty prairie and wildlife. As we got to the eastern edge, it got more hilly and rugged. All in all it was a beautiful experience though. It was kinda nice just pointing the car in a direction and just traveling for the sake of seeing the countryside.
My original intention was to go east to Vinita and then head south to Talimena and the mountains of southeastern Oklahoma. However, Joyce had some homework she needed to get done eventually (though she could do it on Monday morning) so I elected to head back home, going through Tulsa, and back to OKC before heading south for the "Panther City" area. Still, we had a great break. I wish I'd had more time - I'd have liked to finally stop off and say hello to Whitecrow in OKC, but it would have been short notice and all that, and I didn't want to spring any surprises on anyone. Maybe next trip, the one where we go east to Talimena, then north a bit and then west to OKC.
/~ I love to go a-wandering, Along the mountain track...~/
